Ifugao Rice Terraces

The Ifugao Rice Terraces are 2,000 year old rice terraces engineered by the indigenous people of the Ifugao Province.  It is believed to be made by hand with an efficient and ancient irrigation system which provides life to the rice fields.  The rice terraces are around 1500 meters above sea level.  It is also referred to as the Eight Wonder of the World.  Aside from the famous Banaue Rice Terraces, the other notable terraces clusters are in Batad, Bangaan, Hungduan, Mayoyao Central and Nagacadan - all of which are inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage Site list since 1995.  I've been to the Banaue and Hungduan Rice Terraces only but according to reviews I've read online, the Batad Rice Terraces are the best.  The Bayyo Rice Terraces in Bontoc, Mountain Province is said to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site List too.

The Banaue Rice Terraces near the poblacion
My first time in Ifugao was the day after my December 2012 birthday. It was harvest season so we were not able to see the 'green' rice terraces.  The second time I've been there was planting season on  Easter Sunday 2014 but it was raining cats and dogs so were not able to explore.  We stayed in People's Lodge which was overlooking the Banaue Rice Terraces, a view of the poblacion and a river. We went to Hapao, Hungduan to see and walk on the rice terraces and take a dip in the Hapao River and Bogyah Hot Springs.   It was like a dejavu walking in the 'pilapils', touching those 2,000 year old stones that were stacked on top of each other to make a strong foundation for the terraces and mesmerizing at the clear waters of the ancient irrigation systems that provides life to the rice fields. On our way back to Banaue, we dropped by Hiwang Village.  It has native Ifugao houses and they also offer overnight stays.  It is also a great view point of the teracces because we saw the Banaue Rice Terraces at one side and the Hungduan Rice Terraces at the other side.
