The poblacion of Taal is like Calle Crisologo in the heritage city of Vigan with it's Spanish ancestral houses. It is even declared as a National Historical Landmark. But it doesn't stop there. Aside from the Vigan ambiance, Taal also boasts of the Biggest Catholic Church in Asia, the Taal Basilica. The Taal Basilica was constructed in the shores of Taal but due to the 1754 Taal volcano eruption, it was destroyed together with the old town of Taal so it transferred to its present location on a hill facing Balayan Bay. Also in Taal is the Church of Our Lady of Caysasay - a miraculous and the oldest Marian Image in the Philippines. As you enter the welcome arch leading to the town, one can see a lot of stalls selling 'balisong', axes, swords and knives. Thus, Taal is also known as the Balisong and Barong Capital of the Philippines.
